A Caribbean Travel Checklist

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

When planning a trip pretty much anywhere, there are certain things you put on your checklist:

What should you pack? Do you have your tickets? Did you get your passport? What if you get sick when out of the country? How do you contact your insurance company?

Of course, these things are important, but what about the fun checklist? You know the one. The “must do” list of things you absolutely must see, experience, or learn while on your trip.

Here’s a primer to help you develop your own “must do” list for a trip to the Caribbean:

1.Dance the meringue.

2.Learn to make the perfect rum cocktail.

3.See a dolphin in its natural habitat.

Or better yet,

4.Swim with a dolphin in its natural habitat.

5.Buy the perfect gift for yourself or a friend.

6.Watch the sunset over crystal blue-green waters.

7.Learn to play Caribbean poker.

8.Get some great decorating ideas.

9.Add to your wardrobe.

10.Learn to play the steel drums.

Dance the Meringue

The Meringue is a dance that many have seen performed, but few attempt. While in the Caribbean, learn the history of the dance which was developed in the Dominican Republic, and even be so brave as to attempt it yourself. You may find you’re a natural.

Learn to Make the Perfect Rum Cocktail

While in the Caribbean, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to sample various versions of rum cocktails, and it’s likely you’ll find one place that makes the best one you’ve ever had. Sweet-talk the bartender or waitress into telling you, or even showing you, how they make that perfect rum cocktail!

See a Dolphin in its Natural Habitat or Swim With a Dolphin

Dolphins are playful and curious creatures, often appearing along the sides of boats and ships in open waters. Many tours companies offer day or evening sailing trips in the Caribbean, allowing you and your family or friends to enjoy a day in the open sea aboard a small sailing vessel. Dolphins will often be spotted on these trips and if you’re lucky, you might even be able to take a swim in the open ocean with dolphins curiously swimming nearby.

Buy the Perfect Gift for Yourself or a Friend

There will be innumerable chances to discover the perfect gift on your shopping excursions in the Caribbean. Whether you’re browsing booths in an open-air market or ducking inside a corner shop in a town you visit on one of your stops on a Caribbean cruise, you’re bound to find that perfect little something for yourself or a friend or family member.

Watch the Sunset Over Crystal Blue-Green Waters

Whether spied from the deck of a cruise ship or from a quiet corner of a silky, sandy beach, the waters in the Caribbean are a special sight. You’ll have several days on your trip to catch that perfect sunset. The sun silently sinks into the crystalline greenish-blue hues of the Caribbean Sea, leaving behind a perfect twilight and clear view of the starlit sky, unobstructed by the lights of the hustle and bustle of normal, everyday life at home.

Learn to Play Caribbean Poker

Yes, there really is a difference between the poker you may already know and Caribbean poker. Learn to play on the deck of your cruise ship or in that corner bar in town while you’re on your trip. Just think, you can teach it to your friends when you come home and maybe you’ll add to your winnings.

Get Some Great Decorating Ideas

Bring that wonderful tranquil feeling home with you when you incorporate decorating ideas you learned on your trip. Or buy a piece of Caribbean art from a street vendor to place on your bedside table at home.

Add to Your Wardrobe

Get dressed up and go out on the town for a night of dancing or drinks. Take the opportunity to add a wonderful piece or two of Caribbean-style clothing to your wardrobe.

Learn to Play the Steel Drums

Sign up for lessons while visiting a town for the day when on a cruise tour, or take the time to sit and watch the steel drums being played on the street corner one evening. You might even ask for a lesson from a band on the beach near your hotel.

Do you have your passport? Have you packed the right stuff for your trip? Where are your tickets? Have you made your “must do” list yet?

Travel To Varadero – A Tropical Paradise

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

Nestled on the northern tip of Cuba and considered one of the best beaches in the world, the tiny peninsula of Varadero has been attracting tourists for generations. With its pristine white beaches and crystal clear seas, it is not difficult to understand why. Named after the Spanish word for dry dock for which it was first used in the 16th century, Varadero has grown from a small city in the 19th century to a major tourist spot today. Presently, it plays host to more than 500,000 visitors a year who come to experience its tropical charms. Therefore, for a tropical getaway away from humdrum everyday life, you must travel to Varadero.

It is quite easy to get there. There are direct flights to Varadero’s Juan Gualberto Gomez International Airport from North and South America, Europe and the Caribbeans. One can also come by boat and dock at either Gaviota, Chapelin or Puertosol Darsena de Varadero marina. Hotel accommodation in different categories is easily available, with several prominent names like Iberosta, Melia and Sandals having set up shop in the town.

Besides the obvious attractions of the beach, Varadero offers several other places of interest like the natural bounty of the Parque Josone, the exoticism of the Bellamar Caves and the vibrant nightlife of the Tropicana Matanzas, Cuba’s most famous cabaret. Food choices range from upscale restaurants to the numerous vendors dotting the beaches. And who can forget the famous Cuban cigars?

Other places to visit and things to see include the Santa Elvira Church, the 600-year old cactus El Patriarca, the Cardenas seaside town and the “city of bridges” Matanzas by day. At night, one can experience the magic of Cuban nightlife in the hundreds of discotheques, bars and cabarets dotting the region. The Continental Cabaret, the Rumba Palace and the Habana Cafe are worth special mention.

For the sporty visitor looking for thrills, Varadero offers water sports (Barracuda Club), swimming with dolphins (Delfinario), parachuting (International Parachuting Center), and much, much more. The Mojito, a splendid concoction of freshly crushed mint, lime juice and white rum, is a must-have in Varadero, accompanied by the Cuba Libre, a combination of of rum, cola and lime juice.

Varadero offers a combination of great beaches, tasty cuisine and exotic locales in one beautiful package. To escape the rigors of daily life, travel to Varadero and experience a tropical paradise.

St. John – One Of The Hottest Spots In The Virgin Islands

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

If you are looking for a relaxing time in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and to immerse yourself in true, natural, unspoilt surroundings, then St. John stands out as the obvious choice. With two-thirds of the Island designated as National Park, it is the most undeveloped and laid back of the large U.S. Virgin Islands. That is not to say that it is the ‘dull’ choice – far from it. There is plenty to do and see there if you want to spend a a few days away from one of its many beautiful beaches.

As well as secluded, scenic beaches, you will also find the following…

- Awe-inspiring tropical forests

- Fascinating ecological tours

- Exquisite dining

- Enjoyable nightlife

Of special note, and something which should not be missed under any circumstances, is the Virgin Islands National Park, which offers visitors a special opportunity to enjoy and appreciate the beautiful natural resources of the island. It includes hiking trails, historical ruins, and a truly wonderful range of wildlife, some of which is unique to the Island. The beaches within it, which are open to the public, are amongst the best to be found anywhere in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The main towns are Cruz Bay and Coral Bay, and staying in one of these two places allows easy access to restaurants and shops. There are lots of hotels and resorts to choose from, which range from the quaint to the extremely luxurious. Booking early is always advisable as finding anywhere to stay at the last minute is normally impossible.

Many visitors to St. John find themselves making repeat visits, as they have tried other destinations but have been unable to find one that gives them everything that the Island of St. John does. If you are still in doubt as to whether it is the right place for you, find some pictures of it. After seeing how the beaches and National Park look, you will agree that St. John really is a dream destination to spend a vacation.
