Home Security Tips – How To Make Your Home Much Less Appealing To Burglars

Monday, March 8th, 2010

These days everybody is anxious about the security of their homes and rightly so! According to official American government figures, the number of house burglaries has increased by nearly ten percent in the last five years to about fourteen million per year.

That is a great deal of homes. I was burgled ten years ago and I have studied and done my best to never be one of those statistics again. In this piece, I will pass on some of my home security tips on how to make your home unappealing to burglars.

The first thing to think about is whether you have anything in your garden, shed or garage that will help a thief get into your house. Things like ladders, crow-bars, screwdrivers, sledge hammers. If you do, then lock them away. Keep the shed and garage doors locked at all times. If you have a ladder that will not fit in the shed or garage, chain and padlock it to a brick wall, so that nobody can use it to get in.

Never believe that your home is less at risk just because you or someone else is inside it. Some thieves are crazy and it is easier to ask someone where the money is than to try to find it yourself. It is easier to demand the keys to the safe than to break the lock. I know. burglars came into my house while I was at work. They saw my safe, but could not get into it, so they came back three nights later when I was at home. It was truly not pleasant.

Do not put a spare front or back door key under the mat, a flower vase or near-by rock. Thieves expect people to do that and it is the first place they look. If you are thinking about leaving a key with a neighbour, pick your neighbour carefully. In fact select the family well. Does the family have teenage kids? If so, could their friends learn that that ’spare key’ is to your home? Do you trust all the friends of that children? Do you even know them?

Beware of strangers. I do not mean be paranoid, but someone asking to make an urgent call because of a ‘breakdown’, could be casing your home or sizing you up. If you want to help, make the call for them or direct them to the nearest public telephone booth or a shop.

Keep all your doors and windows locked. If reasonable locked shut, when you are away from the house, but you can get window-stay locks so that you can lock a fanlight window ajar a few inches too. This is very helpful in the summer or if you have animals. Lock upstairs windows too – your neighbour may have a loose ladder that a thief can use.

Do not flaunt your valuables unnecessarily. Video recorders, DVD players and even the TV can be put in cabinets. Jewellery should be put in a box or a safe. Cash likewise. Your house is a home, not a presentation case to would be thieves.

My last home security tip to make your home unappealing to thieves is to stay alert and to warn your neighbours of any slip-ups they are making too. If you can elevate the general awareness of crime in the people around you, everyone will be a lot more secure.

Florist Suppliers

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

The key to having a successful floral shop is having a quality florist supplier. You will need a supplier who carries as much of what you need as possible, while at the same time being trustworthy and dependable. Making sure you can afford the prices that your supplier has is another important thing to think about.

A important thing to remember when trying to find a floral supplier is how far away they are located. While it is possible to ship over distances, many people find it more convenient to have a supplier close to their business.

Once you find a supplier, you need to decide what types of flowers you wish to sell. Most floral shops try to keep both classic flowers and colors as well as “in style” flowers and colors in stock for people to choose from. A dependable consultant for colors and flowers is your supplier.

You need to remember to order the little details, such as wire, ribbons, and decorative signs. Wires are essential to holding together bouquets and arrangements. Ribbons and decorative signs add decorative touches that many people appreciate and look for when ordering flowers.

With specialty florist supplies, you can guarantee your success. These supplies can include stuffed animals, which everyone enjoys attaching to a bouquet or arrangement. They also include specialty vases. These are great to have, with the most popular being hearts for valentines day and special occasions and baby booties for new parents.

It is a good idea to be prepared for high school dance seasons, by having florist supplies that enable you to make boutonnieres and corsages. These beautiful floral arrangements are very important to the people ordering them, and represent a large market for a floral shop. You should make sure you have colorful flowers as well as ribbons to make quality boutonnieres and corsages that will have every high school student coming back to your shop.

Another thing to consider when buying florist supplies, is whether or not you will be selling silk arrangements. Many people enjoy these for their home, as they last longer then fresh flowers while still adding beauty.

When opening a shop, it is important to have a great supplier, as well as knowing what you want and need for your store!

No matter how large or small a floral shop is, there are many floral supplies that a florist requires. There are a multitude of tools and florist accessories available depending on a shop’s individual preferences.

Kitchen Decorating Ideas

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

It’s a Sunday morning and you’re sitting there waiting for your coffee machine to finish its various gurgles and noises so you can have that all important early morning cup of coffee. Idly, you look around your kitchen and notice a fleck of paint on the corner of the door. It had been there for years but you never really took any notice of it before.

Your gaze continues to wander and your eye spots a patch of mildew growing just under the sink, then you notice the ugly brown colour that your ceiling has turned just above where the cooker stands.

The paint is faintly off colour, and the only papered wall is beginning to look old-fashioned and grubby. You take a fortifying sip of your now-ready coffee and decide that some kitchen decorating is called for.

How do you go about it though? And how soon can you get started? Now that you’ve finally noticed all the signs of decay that you had been quite successfully ignoring up until that moment, you can’t wait to get started on your little kitchen decorating project.

However, this is decision time. Just how small do you mean to keep your kitchen decorating plans? Can you get away with just slapping a fresh coat of paint on everything or will you need to go to the trouble of stripping the wallpaper off the wall, and finding out what had caused that mildew stain.

Sure enough, it all depends on you and your finances, but if you have the time, energy and money, you’d probably do better, in the long run. to solve all your kitchen decorating problems in one go. That would include stripping off the wallpaper, replacing any carpeting or rugs, and maybe even sanding down your wooden floors if you have them. If you’re going to do a complete job of kitchen decorating however then you’ll also need that all important final coat of fresh paint to smarten up your kitchen.

You might also want to think about replacing those old lace curtains as they’re also probably looking distinctly old by now. So, go ahead and splash out on your kitchen decorating project and replace the curtains and while you’re about it, you might want to think of buying a new stack of tea towels as well. It doesn’t hurt to go the whole hog when you can.

And when you’re finally done, you can sit back and enjoy your new kitchen and remember that weekend morning that started it all off. You’ll have no regrets whatsoever, since your kitchen decorating project has provided you with a better kitchen than you ever hoped for.

A feeling of contentment rushes through you as you bring your new coffee mug to your lips. Life just doesn’t get any better than when you’re enjoying the fruits of your efforts and labour.
