While you are living and traveling around the country in your RV or Motor home you will probably have a concern about money. You will want to spend your money wisely, so that you have money to last your entire trip and have a cash supply in case of emergencies. You will have to cut back on expenses if you want to travel more and you don’t have unlimited money.
Your food budget is one place that you can be flexible. There are many ways that you can cut back on food money. We usually eat out once a week, then we find specials, or eat at lunch time when the prices are cheaper than dinner prices. Most of the time we eat on the motorhome saving money that way. We shop at the grocery stores and use coupons, looking online for specials before we go in and have a shopping list ready so that we don’t over spend. Even when we go out for the day we pack our snacks so that we don’t have to pay higher prices for things that we don’t have to.
While Traveling you can save money by staying some nights at truck stops, and rest areas for a few hours. Some shopping malls will allow you to park there over night for free. If your motor-home is self contained then you won’t have any problems doing this. State parks are another great place to stay that is cheaper than traditional campgrounds. When we are staying a few days at a location we will stay in a campground, but when we are stopping just for the night, we look for cheaper places to stay. Of course if you don’t feel safe, then by all means stay in a campground.
Being on the road so much, we stay in touch with our families through the Internet. While I work online a lot, we have an air card to get connected, but you can use the connection hot spots. You can find these many places, hotels, fast food places, and restaurants. Even if you have to pay for Internet access you will save money that way. You will be able to watch news, TV shows online and find money saving specials online for the town that you are in.
If you want to travel for a few months – there are many ways that you can cut back on expenses, living in a small space full time you won’t have room for new items, so you won’t be shopping for stuff except necessary items, that will save you money there.
Budgeting will help you stretch your travel dollars. Make a budget and stick to it. Be sure that you allow money for “fun”. After all this is why you are taking your RV journey, for fun. Gas will probably be your biggest expense, but find a website and see which station will have the cheapest prices for where you are staying at. Budgeting will help you stay out on the road longer and not have to go back to work as soon. Make that budget and go have fun!
